Make a fun skirt form discarded neck ties

Beautiful Elly
Here it is:  the long awaited tutorial for the skirt made from upcycled neck ties.... that I introduced to you in this previous post.

I love this skirt.  It is so fun to see some of the ties that my husband used to wear....  Not gone, just used in a different capacity..  :)  It's like a memory-quilt, except it's a piece of clothing....

This skirt is a size "small" but thanks to the t-shirt waistband, fits SOOOO many different people.  It is so fun to see how great it looks on many different figures.

My friend Elly Gray agreed to be my model for today, and I am glad she did!  We had a fun time outside (even if it was a bit cold), and we got some cool pictures.  She is a gifted and creative person and a wonderful mom to three terrific kids.

Doesn't she look great?

The skirt looks totally different when you turn it to show off different ties,
and combine it with different colors...  Isn't it great?

What a fun and creative way to use old ties! It would be a fun project to go to garage sales or thrift stores to hunt for the perfect ties to use.

I LOVE this - it is so cute!! Quick question on one step… So you measure your waist and subtract 2 inches = "x". Out of stretch fabric cut 18 inches x "x" inches… So if your waist is 30 inches, "x" = 28. Cut 18 x 28 inches? That would be 504 inches or 42 feet! Am I reading that wrong? Thanks! Claire

Hi claire,

Your comment made me laugh! You are so funny. No, you are right, those are NOT the right dimensions! hahahaha!

I will change it to read to "cut a rectangle of 18 inches by x "
Does that make more sense? I am sorry that was so vague... :(
Let me know if you are still confused, and I will think of another way to explain it...
Have a great day and happy sewing!

This is a fabulous skirt. May be a less-than-smart question, but with the t-shirt waistband, do you have to slip the skirt over your head to get it on and off? Trying to figure out how best to judge when to stop sewing ties together. Thank you!

Hi Allison, thanks so much for stopping by. How fun that you are making a tie-skirt! I would love to see it!! Whether you slip it over your head or pull it up from your feet is up to you. Just do whatever you think is best. Let me know what you decide.
